Târgu Mureş – Getting Around


Târgu Mureş has a well maintained public transport system that comprises of a large fleet of buses and takes passengers all around the city and surrounding suburbs. Tickets can be purchased from automated machines at stops or from the driver and a single usually cost €0.45.

Long distance buses (and maxitaxis) arrive and depart from the main terminal located on Gheorghe Doja Street - with services to most major cities in Romania including Sibiu, Bucharest, Sighişoara and Braşov. Frequent services also run to Budapest in Hungary. Tickets can be purchased at the terminal building or via contacting the bus companies directly.


There are many official taxis that operate throughout Târgu Mureş and can be hailed on the street, but it is often easier to pre-book by telephone. Be sure to only use licensed vehicles that display a phone number and company logo on the outside of the car. Predominantly operated by large companies, vehicles are almost always licensed and use their meters – just make sure they are switched on before you set off.


Trains are maintained and operated by the Romanian Railways and depart from the main station of Gară Târgu Mureş. The station offers daily services to all other Romanian cities including Bucharest, Medias, Brasov and Sibiu. There are also frequent trains Budapest, where connecting transport to other European destinations can be found. Train schedule and advance bookings can be made via the Agenţie de Voiaj CFR’s advance booking office. Tickets for same day travel have to be purchased at the station.
